Is it possible to achieve all 60 first year points in your studies? I assume the points mean ECT credits that you have to reach on a certain level each semester. Also, is it available to do extra credits?
-
It is! The minimum you need is 48 and infact many students do achieve 60 points. Extra credit not so much unless you get special permission to do Second year curriculum.

Hello everyone! Could you give me specific examples of what kind of internships do you apply through, how long is it, and where is it based? (E.g., mainly Amsterdam?) Also, in your experience, how was getting a job with CMGT degree like? Is it hard finding one? If found, how is it like?
-
Hey,
So there is no easy answer for this but in short CMGT sets up in either an artistic path or a programming oriented path (around game software especially). So internships around Environmental Art, Junior Engineer or Concept Art is the likeliest you will want to aim for.
Internships can be anywhere but do keep in mind that you should go for the best internship that sets you up for the future. That means a lot of hard work but it will set you up in the right path.
I currently am a Level Designer back in my home country in the US at a AAA studio and I very much enjoyed it.
-
Hello Gabriel,
I have had some difficulties finding an internship in the first place and as a dropout I can't say much about finding a related job.
As you already feel or will certainly will feel the factor time is pushing you almost all the time so you must indeed do your best to stay ahead of it. In my case the internship was for the same client that Saxion organized for the study intern" minor. In other words my task was to find the right practical scope to make the newly developed prototypes workable. Another task was to assist the public relation department with some graphic design.
Try to become aware as much as possible of your own "taste" in terms of who you are as a person and how you can make that work. In my experience trying to understand empirical methologies is more important than finding "the right solution".
Good luck.
-
As an alumna I have no idea how long and when the internship(s) are nowadays, but usually you have an internship of about 20 weeks in your second or third year and a 20 weeks graduation internship in your fourth year. My first internship was at a video and animation company and my graduation internship was carried out within Saxion. In my experience, not many students have difficulties finding an internship: there are companies situated all over the country that are suited for an internship as a CMGT student or you could go abroad. (This does of course depend on the skills and things you decide to pursue.)
To my knowledge, almost everyone in my graduation year found a job very quickly or got to work at the company of their (graduation) internship, either in Holland or abroad. I personally had no difficulties finding a job and worked as a video editor/motion graphic designer/audio/camerawork, social media manager and in communication/marketing. This is again dependant on your choices within CMGT, but I don't think it should be very difficult to find a job. I do have to mention I'm Dutch, so I speak the native language and also have no idea how easy it would be to find a job in f.e. your home country.

Hi Juvia!
As Willem said it's good if you come to the Open Day but in case it's not possible you should send an email to communitions.io@saxion.nl informing your full name, study choice, nationality, mobile number and the dates you'd like to visit.
Have a nice day!

I have a friend who lives near Enschede (German side) who's going to give me a tour and I'll be staying at her place few weeks, but I'm wondering if I'm able to get a tour and help from the Saxion ambassador? Since I'll be using Saxion accommodation and I rather have a pro tour and guidance :)
-
Hello,
What do you mean by tour per say? Of our campus or something entirely else?
Willem

What basic knowledge for this subject should I already have to ease my studies at the beginning.
-
Hi!
Not much! However I would say it depends on what you wanna go into. So look at Art, Building Levels for other games, modding, scriptimg etc.
This along with enthusiasm for making games will illustrate and guide your skills at the uni!
If you have more, feel free to ask!
Best wishes,
Willem
-
Hii!
The study changes all the time, basic programming HTML, CSS and JAVA are relevant. Applications from the Adobe Creative Cloud: Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro and After Effects. We also worked in Unreal Engine.
Almost every subject you have starts from square one, but these are subjects you'll definitely will get in your classes.
Hopes this helps! Love Sanne

Is it easy for people who do not speak dutch to get along outside of the university? (i am German)How did you feel when starting to live there? Can you start this programm without having a lot of knowledge about computers and programming?
-
Hey!
If you mean by getting along with people outside of University then yes of course! I lived across the world and I found the first two years quite enjoyable but slightly predictable. I think it's an easy well spoken country with good morals.
And yes! One of my best friends didn't even know a line of code and is now one of the best developers in our course!
-
Hello Filippo!
There are a lot of German students here and Dutch people can speak English or/and German. So I think you will feel right at home :D
Don't worry about knowledge. They will teach you all the basics to get you started!Kind regards,
Annika -
Hey! Like Annika said, the teachers will start from the basics. But it's important that you have the motivation to learn! If you are going to apply for the course then start with doing some research in to the topic.
Maybe try something out yourself. This is also a good way to see if you really want to do this.Wish you the best,
Jennifer

Thank you for the answer! This was very helpful. I have another question if you don't mind: What should my portfolio look like?

Hey, I am interested in studying Game Design at Saxion but I have a question about the application.I am a really creative guy and I love to think about game ideas, concepts, mechanics and so on but my drawing skills aren't the best. Should I try to applicate for Game Design and Production anyway?
-
Hi Ben! Thanks for reaching out to us and sorry that it has taken me a while to reply back!
Let me just say this that whilst understanding basic drawing/art skills is important this course is NOT for artists per say. Game Design and Production focuses on creating video games where students learn all areas of the creative side of game development (such as drawing, 3D Modeling, Level Design, Game Economy and much more).
As the teachers will vouch, the first two quarters helps you improve your art skills (or if you don't know how to draw you will be taught it!) but will soon open up to other areas of game development. I can tell you this first hand as I am a decent artist but not good enough to work at Blizzard nor was it my primary interest after a while. In the final semester other courses open up and since then I have yet to go back on it!
I hope this answers your question!

HeyCan i find a place where students their work? Like an portofolio, do teachers have work posted online? Thanks
-
Hi Andrei,
I am not sure what you exactly mean by that but I suspect you want to know a place where students show their work as well as teachers. The bad news is that there aren't that many places to check this out except on Facebook @SaxionGaming.
As for student work, they tend to have portfolios posted online. I have one which you can see to give you an idea of what to expect https://willemkranendonk.carbonmade.com.
As for others, probably you will need to ask Students. There is a Facebook group buts it is only for upcoming Students and actually students (past and present).

HiI came back with another question. Did the teachers work in the game production industry? Or if they still do.
-
Hi Andrei,
No worries, happy you asked more questions! For sure there are! Some have worked on big Triple A titled games, others have worked on Indie Projects and some in totally different fields!
Hope this answers your question!

Maxvroeg 3 jaar, 9 maanden geleden
Hi, my name is Max. I am having problems decided what I should do. I have a really big interest in games, Ive been playing all my life but with no real IT experience. Is it doable for a 24 year old to begin from scratch in this program and manage to find work here in the Netherlands? Thank you!
-
Hi Max!
Great question! Age is not important in this case! I know plenty of people your age that have started and gone on to work at studios across the globe and in The Netherlands! One of my best friends (who is a student at Saxion) had no programming experience (literally none). Now he is one of the best programmers in the course and along with me had created a game that was nominated for a Dutch Student Game of The Year Award!
As for finding work, it really depends. The Netherlands has a very small and not very large influence in the game industry but there are a tonne of good studios in the Netherlands! If you are a programmer you can get a job easily in VR, Software Engineering, Serious Games and of course games in general! For a programmer it's very straightforward I'm short.
If you are become a concept artist on the other hand it's very tough. Hell even if you are in America it's tough to be one but if you are a 3D artist or Game Designer (like me) your chances are solid!
If you want to ask me more questions PLEASE send me a message here or on Twitter @willem567!
Also attend an open day and speak to Taco Van Loon or Eelco Jannik who can also help you out!

HiI'm 11 grade in Romania, and hope i will join this game programme ,after highschool. How it feels to study here? I watched the classes that i will make and i'm exited. XD
-
Salut Andrei!
First good luck at School! It's great that you are planning your ambitions ahead particularly in programming!
Studying in Saxion is very flexible. The programming department is ambitious, fun and extremely paternal amongst your teachers. One of my favorite teachers (who I consider a friend) is from the programming side and he is always ready to meet up with me, spend some time to get coffee and discuss my concerns and a whole lot more!
The best part about Saxion is the fact that by the time you need to search for internships, you will have a large roster of games under your belt that can set you up for some really sick internships wherever you want to go in the world!
Another great thing about Saxion is that the majority of students are international. As you can see from my intro towards you, some of my best friends come from Romania and Bulgaria!
Enschede is also cool. It's an easy place to live, very affordable and it's close to Germany too.
If you wanna learn more you are always welcome to come to our Open days BUT should you have a reason not to come, please feel free to contact me via Twitter @willem567 or via here at IntoSaxion.
Meantime enjoy school!
